What is a chemical burn?

A chemical burn occurs when living tissue is exposed to a corrosive substance such as a strong acid or base.

Symptoms/Signs of a chemical burn

  • Bleeding
  • Bleaching or darkening of skin
  • Coughing up blood
  • Itching
  • Burning sensation

First aid steps

  1. Remove the cause of the burn by first brushing any remaining dry chemical and then rinsing the chemical off with gentle, cool water
  2. Remove clothing or jewelry contaminated by the chemical
  3. Wrap the burned area loosely with a dry, sterile, dressing
  4. Rewash burned area if person experiences increasing burning
  5. Take an over the counter pain reliever such as Advil, Tylenol, etc.

What not to do

  • DO NOT LEAVE CHEMICAL ON SKIN!
  • DO NOT KEEP CONTAMINATED CLOTHES ON!
  • DO NOT CONTINUE TO USE CHEMICAL!
